John Preston Purvis, 65, died Monday, January 24, 2011.

John Preston Purvis, 65, died Monday, January 24, 2011.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 29, 2011 at 3 PM at Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 PM until 8 PM Friday, January 28, 2011 at the funeral home.

Mr. Purvis was born in Charleston, South Carolina on July 27, 1945. He was the son of the late Preston Purvis and Jessie Mae Miles.

John was known by many, primarily because of his profession as a law enforcement officer. He began his career with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office in 1978. While at the Darlington County Sheriff’s office, he served in many capacities before retiring, after almost thirty years, as Lt. over Civil Process and Warrant Division in 2007. Following retirement from the Sheriffs’ Office, John went to work for the Society Hill Police Department and served this community until his death.

John was an avid Marksman having taught firearm training for years. He served his country in the South Carolinas National Guard. He enjoyed fishing and had a fun loving spirit.

Mr. Purvis was preceded in death by his sister, Pearl McLellan.

Survivors include his daughter, Amanda Lynn Smith and husband Mark of Mullins; three step daughters, Ashley Robinson, Maegan Robinson, and Celeste Robinson; one brother, Mike Purvis of Florence; three sisters, Katie Cabanaw and husband Jim of Lexington, NC, Mary Howard of Florence, and Tiny Parnell; four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Law Enforcement Officers Association, 1621 Harry Byrd Hwy., Darlington, SC 29532.
